Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in the US, is a performer and actress. In music, film and television, Queen Latifah has won the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nominations, and nods to the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple divorced when Latifah aged 10 years old. Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Latifah was her stage name at the time she turned eight. It means delicate in Arabic. Latifah's height of 5'10" allowed her to be a formidable athlete at high school. She sang the song home from the show The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah started to beatbox for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah is among the original members of Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective made up of DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the song. He signed Latifah, and released her first track Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
